Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math STEM

Funding is available for STEM and can magnify career opportunities for K-12 students.

National Effort in STEM, goal is to create 1,000 schools that use the STEM project.

Innovation and Risk Taking are core values fto give to students for the project.

The Mathematics Gap, STEM wants to launch a national experiment to infuse math into the CTE standards.

Project based Learning Experience, learning by Doing is the focus. 1/2 students in MCPS are enrooled in a CTE course. Nearly 100% graduation rate for those students that are enrolled in the CTE programs. Keep kids interested and engaged in school.

Graduation Matters Missoula, STEM is an essential component in the initiative. CTE courses and technology hook students into the learning and keep them in school.

21st Century Education and the Global Economy, Work Ethic, Creativity, and Collaboration are essential for student success.

Goal… Students are engaged in programs to create solutions to large world problems this is another hook that keeps student engaged in the classroom environment.

Food Biology, Farm to School Environment for MCPS students.

MCPS Academy for Green Careers, Students work toward industry building certification

Cutting Edge Commputer Science and Computer Technologies, Social Networking, and data analysis for MCPS students.

Professional Development Center, K-20 summer opportunities for Students, can become nationally recognized program.

Labor market needs STEM Graduates for the future. MCPS is on the cutting edge in this partnership with local businesses and The University of Montana to ensure the success of our youth.

We travel to schools to showcase how dance is involved with science instruction and in the use of educational vocabulary to teach students.

Flagship after school prgram is used to teach dance to 4-12 grade students. The goal is to teach content knowledge through the use of dance. This lead to a flash mob that took place at south gate mall with students and university students.

Dance program uses collaboration with The University of Montana and MCPS to enrich the lives of both university students and that of the public school students.

The 4 C’s of 21st Century education in a Middle School Video Production Class

Engagement is a key element in 21st century education.

8th grade video production class. Students lead the class. Literature is used and analyzed through the lense of video production.

We learn to write this language through making films.

Students direct film and the creative decisions lie with the students.

The final project is a large production that involves the whole class. Plot structure is used and then developed into a script.

The student combined all ideas into one script and produced the video.

Student directors are used and plan the story board, and produce the film. Students do all aspects of the project and the educator is the facilitator.

Authentic problem solving is used by design in the classtrooom

My students love making videos

we use inexpensive digital devices and windows movie maker for production

You Tube is used as a tutorial for movie making effects

Movie making can be used in all classes across the curriculum and it a great way of teaching.

Critical thinking and using 21st century educational technology is key.

“How do you experience imagination, creativity, and innovation in your fields? What do students in the 21st and 22nd century need to be career ready in your fields?

James Stephens – Risk Tolerance and need to put yourself out there to be successful. Worked to collaborate with The University of Montana -COT. We have students that need to be involved in the internship programs. College of Journalism needs to continue with their internship programs. They are awesome! – Draft Talent, Internships are Essential….

Education is more accessible to all students through the use of financial aid. Talent needs to be drafted and you cannot train this. Business leaders are ready to take risks and hire Montana students.

Susan Maruca – symbio software that uses interactive models to teach biology and it is inquiry driven. People learn by doing, show then tell. I am representing the world of educational technology. We think of ourselves as technology designers. It can be applied to all manners of instructional design. Constraints for instructional design. Effective instructional design fosters fun through the use of games and models. Games and models are invented and exist in a virtual world. Scaffolding is essential. Google will not replace the teachers because there is not scaffolding and not able to build on complete understanding for instruction. Students need to drive the bus. Technology needs to be used well and it can be used for the job. It is super cool what we can do with technology. Students need to have a broader understanding of the world around them. Design of technology needs to be simple so that students do not get hung up on the aspects of software and can explore. National Science Foundation project uses technology to understand the process of evolution. The development of a game design gives students the ability to use this 21st century educational technology in learning biology. The lab notebook is all digital and can be saved in an electronic portfolio.

Employees of SimBio were not prepared to work collaboratively and this is an essential component that schools need to include in preparation for the world of work. Design training needs to be included for all because of its uses in the world of work.

Michael McGill – Child Development, technology is re-wiring our world. Where is this going? The arts are an integral part of educaton and need to continue to be part of our public education systems and cannot be cut. School wide reform needs to continue to include arts programs. Children are the masters of Arts and have the tools to step into the first person perspectives through their exploration of arts. Students can create through the guided practice of our dedicated teachers. Creativity and innovation are essential and need to be fostered and partnered with including technology.

Low income students who are exposed to Arts start functioning at a higher level once exposed to the value of the arts. MCT gives me and experience how our program works with public education. MCT is committed to the development of student success and through building partnerships and collaboration. MCT gives student the ability to take risks and see success after putting themselves out there. This builds character and fosters collaboration for all students.

Brigitta Miranda-Freer – I work with Missoula Business World on a daily basis… Creation of new businesses and startups for Missoula. Stakeholders created a dialogue to create probability of success. Open space to interact with other business leaders to move their projects forward. Online components include the collaboration online for all stakeholders for professional development to help all members of the Missoula business world. “We are interested in investing in our community and creating an environment for creativity.”

Students need the ability of communicate effectively both verbally and in written form. Need to be engaging and relevant to stand out and showcase student talents. Students need to make decisions in an imperfect environment where a start up business environment is hectic. Mentoring and internships are essential. Students need to learn how to save money and have a good business sense.

2009 and 2010 democratazation of technology where technology is at the fingertips of all individuals and can be used in all settings.

Cell Phone Cinema is a new class at The University of Montana and in this course students can create digital movies with the technology that we are all using daily.

Photo shop is everywhere, 5 year olds can make movies

The technology boundaries are gone and the world is flat… Socialization can occur at any time in any place at any time.

Transformations have occurred and “we are not going home” the internet is not a fad and changes are here to stay.

1. 1969 Woodstock, The Moon Landing, Sent the first file over the Internet October 1969.

Kitty Hawk and a picture of a computer and the students know the picture of Kitty Hawk but not the picture of the computer that was first used for the Internet was not recognized.

1980′s

Evolution of the MAC computer and its uses in the future. This is going to change everything. Reference to the first MAC computer and its uses

1990′s AOL, Compuserve, Came along to access the internet and they wanted to start teaching people how to use the technology and the uses of digital music and its uses.

2nd AHHA moment was when the Internet was invented in the early 90′s.

“I always have my eyes open and will be looking for the transformation of technology into the next decade.” We cannot be content with where we are now. Keep on the cutting edge.

.
